SAVE THE OCEAN

As a passionated surfer and ocean lover I am very interested in how to generate more attention for the current problems concerning ocean pollution and illegal fishing. With the following game animation I wanted to combine playful and more serious elements by using a self created game interface to take advantage of the way games build a new dimension of user experience. I mainly used Illustrator for every design element and after effects for animation.

Creating a meaningful “game”

The biggest challenge was to create a meaningful animation by setting clear goals for the fake game sequence (collecting as much trash as you can) and making people curious what will happen next. Normally one of the key factors of a game is that players will get a reward at the end of the game by winning. But in this animation nobody can win, because the main message will be „stop ocean pollution and illegal fishing – because sea animals don’t have a change of surviving otherwise. The game can not be won.

Idea and Story

The main idea was to create a game sequence in which a cute seaturtle with a gas mask tries to save the ocean by collecting trash. But because of the many dangers in the ocean, it will die in the end. Crucial elements in the whole animation are the sounds which really make the game lively and give the animation a real game character.

Character and world design

To underline the whole issue concerning the ocean pollution the world design is kept in „dirty“, dark colors and there is trash anywhere in the ocean – on the ground, in the seaweed, floating in the ocean… The character itself is cute and emotional so that people immediately feel sympathy for the sea animals.
